Black Myth: Wukong has smashed Steam records as the game with the highest number of concurrent players of all time.

When the Chinese Dark Souls-style action fighter launched yesterday, it immediately entered the top ten chart alongside the likes of PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS, Elden Ring, CS2, Cyberpunk 2077, and others.

Almost immediately upon launch Wukong had over 996,000 registered players. Today, that figure (at the time of writing) stands at 2,311,921.

Black Myth: Wukong now officially sets the record as the game with the highest concurrent player count ever on Steam, beating both Counter-Strike 2 (with 2,111,104 all time peak players) and PUBG (with 3,257,258 all time peak players in July 2018).

From developers Game Science, Wukong is is an action role-playing game inspired by the classical Chinese novel Journey to the West. The action follows Sun Wukong, an anthropomorphic monkey based on the character of the same name from the novel.

Released for PS5 and Windows, with an Xbox X/S release slated for a later date, the game has been praised by critics for its rich Chinese culture, impressive combat, and stunning looks (IGN), and for it’s dramatic and spectacular boss fights (Eurogamer).

Others described it as “an imperfect but ambitious action RPG” (PCGamesN), while Rock Paper Shotgun noted the game’s story delivery is difficult to follow and its story chapters somewhat disjointed.

With Black Myth: Wukong also setting records as the most-wishlisted game on Steam since May 2024, no doubt players will be discussing its merits for some time to come.
