Ahead of its season 2 finale on August 24, HBO’s Max quietly renewed And Just Like That… for Season 3. But for fans of the series the biggest surprise came in the form of a cameo from Kim Cattrall’s Samantha Jones, who appeared, albeit briefly, to help Carrie bid farewell to her apartment … or y’know, flat as it’s called these days.
Samantha attempted to join Carrie in person on the night in question, but plane scheduling chaos ruined her plans for a surprise visit. Travel hiccups didn’t stop fans witnessing a tender exchange via phone call between the show’s old friends in a scene that was for most people, a complete surprise. (The cameo was leaked to press some weeks before the finale episode, so if you knew, you knew.)
“We had a conversation about it and we decided that it was right for the fans,” said Kristin Davis, who executive produces the series alongside Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and showrunner Michael Patrick King. “The fans miss Samantha. The fans love Samantha. Samantha’s a fantastic character. We get it.”
But does the cameo mean that Samantha Jones is back to stay?
“I don’t think I’ll ever say goodbye to Samantha,” said Cattrall. “She’s like a lot of other characters that I’ve done over the years. I get very emotionally attached and protective of my characters. She gave me so much, and I’m so appreciative of her.”
Cattrall, who declined a role in the third Sex and the City movie, and who was not originally invited to appear in And Just Like That… went on to add: “This is as far as I’m going to go.”
Aw, really?
Let’s hope that in this case the writing’s definitely not on the wall. With the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike ongoing, there’s plenty of time to dream up a a storyline befitting of Samantha Jones’ legacy and possible return.
Speaking on the renewal, Sarah Aubrey, Head of Original Content said “We are delighted to share that since the launch of season two, And Just Like That… ranks as the #1 Max Original overall, and is the most-watched returning Max Original to date.”
“As we approach the highly anticipated season finale on Thursday, we raise our cosmos to Michael Patrick King and his magnificent team of writers, producers, cast and crew who continue to charm us, 25 years later, with dynamic friendships and engaging stories. We cannot wait for audiences to see where season three will take our favorite New Yorkers.”
Executive Producer Michael Patrick King added “We are thrilled to spend more time in the ‘Sex And The City’ universe telling new stories about the lives of these relatable and aspirational characters played by these amazing actors. And Just Like That… here comes season three.”
