Alan Wake 2 is officially Remedy Entertainment’s most successful game, with 1.3 million units sold to date.

The software studio released the game’s sales stats as part of a stock exchange statement on February 16, 2024.

Remedy’s CEO Tero Virtala commented in a statement “We are happy with the start of Alan Wake 2’s sales. The price point has also remained at a high level, and the game has already recouped a significant part of the development and marketing expenses. We will continue to develop the game to serve existing fans and attract new players and expect the game to continue selling well.”

Tero Virtala added “The successful launch of Alan Wake 2 has supported our other game projects: Condor, Control 2 and Max Payne 1 & 2 remake have all increased development pace thanks to the personnel released from Alan Wake 2, and we expect these projects to reach their next development stages during the first half of 2024. We now have two established franchises: Control and Alan Wake, which are linked through the Remedy Connected Universe. Growing and expanding these franchises will be a key part of our future.”

Alan Wake 2 is a survival horror game, and sequel to 2010’s action adventure Alan Wake.

The game sees Matthew Porretta (voice) and Ilkka Villi (physical performance) return as Alan, along with Melanie Liburd as FBI agent Saga Anderson, a new protagonist in Remedy’s connected universe that also spans the Control and (unofficially) Quantum Break universes.

Alan and Saga must work together to free Alan from the Dark Place, save Saga’s daughter, and defeat the Dark Presence that has been a malevolent presence in the town of Bright Falls for decades.

The game sees its actors taking on several roles, often to humorous effect, with game director Sam Lake (who has a storied history of appearing in his own creations) playing both a version of himself, Saga’s partner — grizzled and cynical FBI agent Alex Casey — and a fictional character by the same name from Alan’s novels.

Ilkka Villi also plays a new version of poet/diver Tom Zane, who in the 2023 game appears to be a Finnish filmmaker with dubious intentions. Meanwhile, Matthew Porretta returns as Dr. Casper Darling, a character from Remedy’s Control, who also finds himself trapped in the Dark Place. Dr. Darling’s videos are available by playing the Final Draft version of the game, which also offers an alternative ending.

Finnish actor Peter Franzén takes on a double role as the Koskela brothers — Ilmo and Jakko — who not only provide comic relief but who help advance the darker elements of the storyline.

David Harewood meanwhile is Warlin Door (perhaps in a nod to Mr Hatch, a role originally played by the late Lance Reddick in 2016’s Quantum Break). Quantum Break’s Shawn Ashmore also appears as Bright Fall’s resident sheriff Tim Breaker, who mysteriously disappears at the start of the game.

Alan Wake 2 was originally released in October 2023, and had sold 1 million units by the end of December, making it Remedy’s fastest selling game so far.

According to Remedy’s statement “Alan Wake 2 sold over 50% more copies and over three times more digital copies in its first two months than Control did in its first four months. Since its release in 2019, Control has sold over 4 million units, generating net revenue (shareable revenue between Remedy and a publishing partner, excluding taxes and platform fees) of approximately EUR 100 million. A great game can generate excellent long tail sales, and we expect this to be the case with Alan Wake 2 as well.

We will continue promoting and supporting Alan Wake 2 and are creating two paid DLCs that will expand the story. We are also releasing updates and carrying out other activities to support the game and its community.”

Alan Wake 2 collected 3 awards at the Video Game Awards in December 2023 — Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, and Best Art Direction — as well as Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction at the 27th Annual D.I.C.E. awards, and Critic’s Choice award at the Golden Joystick awards.

Alan Wake 2 will be followed by two DLC’s, Night Springs, and The Lake House, available in 2024.
