CBS has revealed plans for NCIS: Origins, a new drama series set in the world of NCIS, and coming to our screens as part of the Network’s 2024/25 programming slate.

The new drama is part of the NCIS franchise, and sees Mark Harmon, who famously played Gibbs for over 18 years, now taking on the role of narrator as the series explores a the life of a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs.

The series promises to both reintroduce fan-favorite characters in addition to meeting new ones. Set in the year 1991, Origins will see Gibbs just starting out in his career as a newly minted special agent at the fledgling NCIS Camp Pendleton office where he forges his place on a gritty, ragtag team led by NCIS legend Mike Franks.

NCIS: Origins is executive produced by Harmon, his son Sean Harmon, Gina Lucita Monreal and David J. North, and will reunite North and Monreal, who both wrote on NCIS for 10 years. (North is currently co-showrunner and executive producer on NCIS.)

“The character of Gibbs has been an important part of my life for 20 years, both in watching my father craft the role and previously having the honor to play young Gibbs myself,” said Sean Harmon. “I always felt there was a tale worth telling about his earlier years, so I am thrilled to be stepping into a producing role alongside Gina, David and my dad as we tell this story and reveal a new side of this beloved character.”

“We’re thrilled to be bringing this new chapter to life along with Mark and Sean Harmon,” added Monreal. “This really is the making of Leroy Jethro Gibbs. And even the most dedicated NCIS fans will discover that they don’t know the whole story.”
