Disney+’s latest Star Wars series, The Acolyte, is not moving ahead with a second season, it was revealed today.
The sci-fi series, from Leslye Headland, set 100 years before Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, followed Sol (Lee Jung-jae) an esteemed Jedi Master investigating the origins of a series of crimes that quickly unearth painful and hidden memories from his past.
The series also starred Amandla Stenberg as Verosha “Osha” and Mae-ho “Mae” Aniseya, twin sisters who struggle with their connection to the Force and their relationship to Sol.
Manny Jacinto played a prominent role in the show’s closing episodes as the stranger, a sinister force that threatened to pull the sisters apart, and finally expose Sol’s questionable past.
The Acolyte first premiered with two back-to-back episodes on June 4, 2014. One episode followed weekly until the finale on July 16.
The premiere episodes pulled a respectable audience for Disney+, garnering 4.8M views in its first day and ranking as the streamer’s biggest series premiere of the year to date.
However, subsequent episodes saw markedly lower viewership ratings, and the show garnered criticism from some Star Wars fans, at one point falling victim to a review bombing campaign.
Following continued lower ratings The Acolyte was finally canceled after only one season.
