James Gunn (The Guardians of the Galaxy volumes 1, 2 and 3, The Suicide Squad) will helm Warner Bros. Superman: Legacy, scheduled for theatrical release on July 11, 2025, it was revealed today.
Gunn, who also penned the screenplay for the new action adventure, made the announcement as part of he and fellow Chairman & CEO Peter Safran’s (Aquaman, Shazam) launch the first phase of their connected DC Universe.
Safran is on board to produce.
Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.
David Corenswet will take over the titular role from Henry Cavill, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner.
Gunn will direct from his screenplay based on characters from DC.
Meanwhile, writer/director Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II hits theaters on October 3, 2025, while Safran’s most recent film, New Line Cinema’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods, is in theaters worldwide this Friday, March 17.
