Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan look like serious Oscar contenders in this extended look at Maestro, an ambitious new film chronicling the life of legendary composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein.

The film premieres theatrically on Nov. 22, before hitting Netflix on Dec. 20 later this year.

Cooper, who directed, produced, and co-wrote the script with Josh Singer, stars as Leonard Bernstein, while Mulligan takes on the tole of actress Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein, with whom Bernstein shared a marriage, three children and a lifelong relationship.

The film follows the couple from Bernstein’s Carnegie Hall debut into old age, and is filmed in both Black and White and color.

“It was just the most exciting part and felt akin to some of the roles that I’ve been privileged to play on stage, but had not found the equivalent of on screen so much,” Mulligan commented on the role.

“It was so rich and there was so much breadth to her character and so much change in her life. I was just amazed that Bradley was asking me to do it.”

Comparing Maestro to A Star is Born, which he also directed, Cooper said “For Maestro I figured it was mine to mess up because I had a nuclear weapon and that’s Leonard Bernstein’s music. Just the breadth of it, how diverse it is, and how moving it is.”

Heavyweights Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg take on Executive Producer credits for the film.

Maestro is described as both a love story and a love letter to life and art, with an emotional portrayal of family and love at its core.

The film also stars Maya Hawke (Stranger Things) as Jamie Bernstein, Sarah Silverman (The Sarah Silverman Program) as Shirley Bernstein, Gideon Glick (Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark) as Tommy Cathron, and Matt Bomer (Doom Patrol, White Collar) as David Oppenheim.

In a new extended look that dropped today, courtesy of Netflix, we catch a glimpse of the Bernstein’s very first meeting, along with the ensuing triumphs and tribulations that underscored their lives.
