Is Paramount’s Yellowstone about to be canceled?

Rumor, from Deadline, suggests yes … and no.

The magazine reports today that co-creator and showrunner Taylor Sheridan and Paramount Network are making moves to bring their beloved show to an end over scheduling conflicts with series star Kevin Costner.

However, while the show may be ending in its current form, plans are afoot to extend the franchise, and even continue the Dutton saga, with Matthew McConaughey in talks to star in yet another spin-off to the popular series.

Yellowstone has already spun off 2 successful prequels for streamer Paramount+ — 1883, starring Tim McGraw, Faith Hill and Sam Elliott, and 1923, starring Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford.

The scheduling conflict is rumored to center around the fact that Costner, who is currently starring in and directing his new Western Horizon, only wanted to film one week shooting the fifth and current season of Yellowstone, a decision which is lowering morale among fellow cast-mates.

Paramount Network responded to Deadline’s article with the following statement:

“We have no news to report. Kevin Costner is a big part of Yellowstone and we hope that’s the case for a long time to come. Thanks to the brilliant mind of Taylor Sheridan, we are always working on franchise expansions of this incredible world he has built. Matthew McConaughey is a phenomenal talent with whom we’d love to partner.”

However, as Paramount has since moved against Costner’s scheduling request, and is pushing ahead with the new sequel series, the writing seems to be on the wall for Yellowstone in its current form, at least. It is envisaged the show will end following its fifth seasonal run.

Yellowstone’s first half of the fifth season premiered in November 2022, with the second half set to premiere at an as yet unannounced date in 2023.

The new show will bow on the cable channel Paramount Network before streaming exclusively on Paramount+.
