Just when we thought the adventures of Din Djarin and Grogu might be a thing of the past, Walt Disney Studios and Lucasfilm surprised fans this week by announcing a new big screen feature “The Mandalorian and Grogu” starting production in 2024.

The movie will be directed by The Mandalorian showrunner Jon Favreau, who will also take on producer duties with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and Dave Filoni.

“I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created,” Favreau said in a statement. “The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”

“Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen,” added Kennedy.

The Mandalorian series from Disney+ took place five years after the events of Return of the Jedi and the fall of the Galactic Empire. The series followed Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal), a lone Mandalorian bounty hunter hired by Imperial remnant forces to retrieve a force sensitive child (Grogu), but who instead goes on the run to protect the infant from sinister forces.

Pascal has not yet been announced to be involved in the project.
